The musical is a joint project of C.-M. Schonberg & A. Boublil. Lyrics & libretto wrote R. Maltby Jr. The project is based on the opera Madame Butterfly, of the G. Puccini’s authorship. The only difference between creations is that in the first case, it is told about the tragic relationship of Asian girl & an American soldier. The second case describes unrequited love of Lieutenant & geisha. The show was a great success in the Boublil’s career. The first was the musical Les Miserables, subsequently received the status of cult.
The first play was on September 1989 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London. Two years later, the project was transferred to Broadway with opening in April 1991. Musical stayed in theaters for almost 10 years & was closed in January 2001. During this period, the audience saw 4092 performance. The director of the production, as well as in the original version, was N. Hytner. His team also includes composer-consultant B. Avian, stage designer J. Napier, costume designer S. Benzinger, and lightning designer D. Hersey. This histrionics still holds 13th place in the ranking of the longest-running Broadway’s productions of all times.
