Let me be your light
Your Light was a deleted song that originally sat between Ismarus and Warrior of the Mind in the structure of EPIC. It was ultimately replaced by Open Arms, which offered a tighter connection to the overarching plot. The song followed Polites in the aftermath of Ismarus, as he tried to lift Odysseus’ spirits.
At one point, the two begin reflecting on their youth—on days spent roaming forests in search of the wildest threats they could find. They recall a specific memory: a run-in with one of Athena’s magical boars. As the beast charged, Polites froze in fear, only to be saved at the last second when Odysseus threw himself between them. The song ends with a heartfelt duet, each promising to be the other's guide and comfort. By the close, Odysseus is visibly calmer—anchored by friendship.
Trivia
- Your Light predates EPIC entirely. Jorge Rivera-Herrans originally wrote it as a love song for a personal crush, only to later repurpose it for the musical after realizing how catchy it was.
- A lesser-known draft of the song existed before the final version. This earlier version was set before Odysseus left for war and may have focused on him and baby Telemachus. It likely belonged to an early draft of EPIC that split into The Iliad and The Odyssey.
- At one point, a reprise of Your Light was planned. It would have featured Odysseus and Penelope, sitting on their bed and mourning his conscription into the war. Beyond this, not much else is known.
- The song was eventually cut for several reasons: it slowed the narrative, felt disconnected from the saga’s plot, and portrayed Polites in a way that didn’t align with his final characterization.
- One lyric has Polites ask Odysseus, “Could I be your light?” Later, in We’ll Be Fine, Athena sings, “Then his light went dark.” This may subtly reference Polites’ earlier line—possibly a leftover nod to when Your Light was still part of the story.
