Worthy Lyrics
Worthy
No one will remember where the battle lines were drawn. It's hard enough to tell which side each country is on.
Towns like Toul, which stand so near the trenches, are like a shell in ruins.
But then we come parades of bright young pilots who still have light in our eyes.
So they open up their homes or what's left of them, and they pour us local wine like an offering.
And we fill the many hours of waiting around trading lessons in our various languages.
How they look at us like saviors in our aerial machines.
For the first time I'm aware of what my talent really means. This morning where the village meets our field stood a boy of maybe eight or nine or ten and the bony arms tattooed should reveal made me think his last poem was God knows when.
But he held within his tiny hand a half a loaf of bread and while offering it to me in a trembling voice he said, mercy.
Mercy, I said.Oh, my Ruth, I want to be a man who earns this favor.
I want to be worthy.
Not just some man who's stronger or who's braver, but who is what you deserve.
I want to serve a noble, clearer mission, something to make me worthy.
Not just a skill to fly- a blind ambition- I want to be someone more.
I need to deliver something meaningful, some hope.
And I need to live up to the stakes, the history..
And scope.
The enormity of it all, but starting small like this boy.I want to be the man that he believes in.
I want to be.
I thought I came from nothing, I thought I lacked so much.
But my vision was shortsighted and selective
So here I stand amidst
Desperation one can touch
And what I truly lacked was perspective
I want to be deserving of such honor
I want to be worthy.
worthy.
worthy.
