Busker Alley – a musical, which was released in 1995 but successfully made its debut only in 2004. It has a long history. Initially, it was the story of Heinrich Mann, released in 1905, which inspired the creation of British film in 1938. The film itself was forgotten for decades until members of Walt Disney Company in the course of routine development of new scenarios found it. One of the writers found the authors of the film and suggested them to buy the rights to the musical creation. The musical was written after 9 years, but never went into production. Another 13 years later, it was the second attempt to release it, but again unsuccessful, as no one was interested in the idea and producing. It took another 12 years and in 1995 the musical, rewritten three times, was released in the USA, but did not make it to Broadway in this year.
After another name’s change (its other titles were Partners of the Night, St. Martin's Lane, Sidewalks of London, London After Dark, Stage Door Charley), Brown Theatre, which is located in Kentucky, hosted the premiere of the show and this theater began a national march of the tour of the musical on 16 cities of USA. M. Lewis, D. Roberts, B. Barrett & T. Roberts were part of the cast. Jeff Calhoun, winner of many different-weight awards, including the Tony for the periods 1994-2012, was director of this musical, and was responsible for the choreography. Tony Walton was a set director.
The national tour ended with one unfortunate issue when the leading actor broke his leg on stage on October 8, 1995. The investors have decided to stop the show immediately.
In 2006, the musical took restart with Glenn Close & Jim Dale. Glenn Close many know not only as an actress of musicals, but also as a film actress, who played, particularly, in films about Dalmatians. The other actors were: D. Wasnak, G. S. Irving, C. Candler, S. Jones, M. L. Trautman, N. Racey, A. Rogers, J. Bolton, J. Grove & R. Fitch.
