Witches of Eastwick, The Script - Broadway musical
THE WITCHES OF EASTWICKACT ONE
SCENE ONE: THE BAY
The stage is blank except for rows of white picket fences, beautiful, perfect, and upright. Center stage, a Little Girl stands, holding a faceless doll.
Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie enter as the Little Girl sings. They watch her.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
(Turning out)
Eastwick knows.
(Enter the Townspeople of Eastwick, en masse in parade formation. Heading the parade is the imposing Felicia Gabriel.)
Felicia
Ev'ry wink and ev'ry stare is the neighborhood's affair.
Gina / Greta
It just shows how much we care when we propose.
(The crowd disperses, and Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie have a brief, whispered conversation as the townspeople move away.)
Joe
Alexandra...
Raymond
Jane...
Clyde
Sukie...
Joe / Raymond / Clyde
We should talk about where things are leading to.
Joe
What’s say next time we leave the lights on?
Raymond
I don’t suppose you're any worse than my wife.
Clyde
If I had half a brain, I'd leave Felicia, and...
Joe / Raymond / Clyde
Start up somewhere fresh with you.
SCENE ONE: THE BAY (continued)
Sukie
Do you really mean that?
Jane
I feel so desired.
Alexandra
You just ruined it.
(Music in.)
Gina
Joe?
Greta
Raymond.
Felicia
Clyde!
(The three men fold back into the crowd, joining their wives. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie sheepishly make the walk of shame across the stage, to the rear of the assemblage. Felicia, Greta, Gina, and indeed the whole town eye them with suspicion.)
Townspeople
Eastwick knows...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...things they have no business knowing.
Townspeople
Eastwick hears...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...and soon the gossip’s changing hands.
Townspeople
Eastwick sees...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...what Eastwick isn’t meant to witness.
Townspeople
Eastwick knows...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...but it never understands.
Rev. Ed Parsley (stepping up to the dais)
A hearty welcome, please, for the chairperson of the Eastwick Preservation Society: Felicia Gabriel.
Felicia (gesturing to the house behind her)
The Lenox House! Home to the majestic elms, haven for the endangered Snowy Egret. Today, it is with great pride that I... that is to say, the Preservation Society... announces its intentions to buy from the county this historic landmark and restore it to its proper and rightful glory!
(The town wildly applauds her.)
Townspeople
As flowers bloom, as bees will buzz;
Eastwick thrives as Eastwick does
for Eastwick is as Eastwick was
and always will be.
Eastwick shares.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
Each day the same old nonsense.
Townspeople
Eastwick learns.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
The same accusing glances.
Townspeople
Eastwick cares.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
A thousand prying eyes that...
Townspeople
...heed the tides.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...please something happen, somehow.
Townspeople
...mind the throes.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...deliver me from Eastwick.
Townspeople
Eastwick sees.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...please save me quick before I...
Townspeople
East...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
...die!
Townspeople
...wick.
(THUNDER! A storm hits. Everyone screams and runs for shelter in a panic. Felicia is aghast. Alex, Jane, and Sukie look up in amazement at the seeming coincidence, then run themselves.)
SCENE TWO: ALEXANDRA’S DEN
The scene wipes to Alexandra's living room. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie all rush in, soaking wet.
Alexandra
Quick! Inside, inside!
Jane
Ugh. (shaking off the water) The heavens sob on New England.
Sukie
Careful; the hardwood.
Alexandra
Let it warp. It suits me.
Jane
Did you see how steamed Felicia was? Her precious fundraising announcement; completely washed out.
Alexandra
A little rain was just what was called for.
Jane
I, for one, couldn't be happier. It's always the same thing – the whole town singing the glory of Felicia Gabriel.
Sukie
I know she's my boss at the paper, but I was actually praying... for something to... you know... end it. Wishing...
Alexandra
I was thinking the same thing. Hoping for...
All Three
...something to happen!
(A small flash of LIGHTNING and a RUMBLE OF THUNDER.)
Jane
I was, too. Isn't that bizarre?
Alexandra (exiting to the kitchen)
Does anyone want brownies? With peanut butter?
Sukie
I am getting so fat.
Jane
You're a twig.
Sukie
I'm a trunk.
Alexandra
Who wants what to drink?
Sukie
I'd love half a cup of coffee.
Alexandra (re-entering with a tray of martinis)
Too bad, baby. We're having martinis.
Jane / Sukie
Ooooh!
Alexandra
You know, I really thought Ozzie would have taken the martini set with him when he ran off. Then again, the girl he ran off with probably wasn't old enough to drink.
Sukie
Was she really that young?
Alexandra
Sukie, if she'd been any younger...
Jane
Or thinner.
Alexandra
...she'd have been a fetus.
Jane (sitting on a little statue)
Ow!
Alexandra
There she is.
Jane
Still making these little bubbie statues, I see.
Alexandra
Not that anyone's buying them anymore, but yes. Hey, do you girls want...?
Sukie / Jane
No!
Jane
Sorry Lexa, but if I put any more little naked ladies in my house, the whole town’s going to think I'm a lesbian.
Alexandra
As opposed to what they think now?
Jane
I have no idea what you’re talking about.
(THUNDER. Jane reacts.)
Alexandra
It’s getting bad; I wonder where my offspring is off to. Does he work on Thursdays now?
Sukie
I think I saw him go off with Jennifer when the storm hit.
Jane
It's getting serious, isn't it?
Alexandra
It can't be. She's going to Stanford in the fall, thank God.
Sukie
Distance lends enchantment. Maybe they'll get married.
Alexandra
Bite your tongue, Sukie. I'm praying it's just casual sex.
Jane
Not likely. You’re a woman; look at her—Jennifer Gabriel is clearly a virgin.
Alexandra
Sometimes I think her mother is, too.
Jane
Can you imagine having Clyde and Felicia for parents? I'd have hanged myself with my training bra by now.
Sukie
Clyde wants to leave Felicia. He told me this morning.
Alexandra
He won't, Sukie. She owns half the property in this town. She owns the newspaper.
Jane
Lexa...
Sukie
It's not like... I'm not trying to steal him away from his family, Alex. It's just sometimes I... I need someone. For me.
Jane
It's no different than you and... well, what's his name this week?
Alexandra
Joe Marino.
Jane
Did this one stick around long enough for you to at least take off your dress?
Alexandra
You don't approve?
Jane
Of you keeping your dress on? Or the whole thing?
Sukie
Who wants another martini?
Jane
I just don't know why you let men use you like that.
Sukie
Jane!
Alexandra
Just making up for lost time, Janey. You know; since the divorce.
Jane
I told you that in confidence. I said I didn’t want to talk about it tonight.
Sukie
Talk about what? Her divorce? (off a withering look from Jane) Your divorce.
Jane
I swear, Lexa.
Sukie
Oh, honey. Did the papers from Phil finally come through?
Jane
Yes. Three years to the day he walked out the door.
Sukie
Amazing.
Alexandra
Why are all the good ones gay?
Jane
He wasn't that good.
Alexandra
There’s always Raymond Neff.
Jane
Oh, yes. Give us details.
Alexandra
Sorry, Lexa, but unlike you these days, I have no details to give.
Sukie
You mean you still haven’t...?
Jane
His choice. I’ve decided to take it personally.
Alexandra
Do you think he still sleeps with Greta?
Sukie
Oh... oh God, I don’t even want to picture it.
Jane
No, he does. Listen to this; he says he has to “give it to her” at least once a week or she starts breaking things.
Sukie
Can you imagine? It would be like making love to excited sauerkraut.
Jane / Sukie
Ewwww!
(Michael and Jennifer enter and stand talking at the fence outside the house. Alexandra spies them through the front door window.)
Alexandra
Michael?
Michael
I know!
Alexandra
Are you working tonight?
Michael
Okay. Jeez, I’m coming.
Alexandra (To Jane, leaving the window)
He used to be so sweet.
Sukie
Alex, do you really keep your dress on when you, ya know?
Alexandra
Honey, don’t knock it. I haven’t had to shave under my arms in years.
Jane
And here I was worrying about people thinking I was a lesbian.
(They all laugh. Michael and Jennifer enter the room.)
Jane
Hi, Michael.
Sukie
Michael.
Michael
I need my tie.
Alexandra
And hello to you, too.
Michael
Mom; my tie?
Alexandra
I think it’s in your room, on your bed.
Michael (To Jennifer)
I’ll be right back.
Alexandra
She’s allowed in your room, Michael.
Michael
Mom!
Alexandra
What? What did I say?
(Michael runs off to his room.)
Jennifer
Hi. Are you having a party tonight? Is it someone’s birthday?
Alexandra
God forbid.
Jennifer
Oh now, Mrs. Spofford, you're so young. You must have been a baby when you got married.
Alexandra
Actually, Jennifer, I was eighteen when I got married. Of course I was seventeen when I got pregnant, but then...
Jane / Sukie
...that's another story.
Michael (Re-entering, tying his tie)
I'm closing tonight. I'll be home late.
Sukie
Do you need a ride home, Jennifer?
Jennifer
Oh no, I'm going to walk Michael to the diner.
Alexandra
In the rain? To the other side of town?
Jennifer (Beaming at Michael)
I don’t mind.
(Michael and Jennifer gaze at each other, sigh and leave. Alexandra closes the door.)
Alexandra
It’s a little hard to watch.
(Beat. They rush to the window and watch Michael and Jennifer at the fence again.)
Music No. 3: MAKE HIM MINE
Michael
Jennifer, when I'm with you, it's like... there's this... I just feel...
Michael
Something
Deeper than the night.
I feel this...
Jennifer
A kind of...
Michael
Something...
Jennifer
A perfect...
Michael
Something...
Jennifer
With you there’s...
Michael
(Beat.) Something.
Jennifer
Oh, Michael. You always know just what to say.
(Holding hands, they exit. Sukie and Alexandra sit on the couch. Jane starts to pour herself another martini, thinks better of it, and swigs from the pitcher instead. She sits. They all look out, glumly.)
Alexandra
Look at us.
Sukie
It's so pathetic.
Jane
Why is it every time I see someone young and happy like that I just want to smack 'em?
Alexandra
I dunno. But that's an interesting quality in a teacher.
(THUNDER. They all laugh uproariously. They stop. They sigh.)
Sukie
What is it we want, anyway?
Alexandra
Who knows? Maybe... a man?
Jane
Another man? Jesus, Lexa. Besides, I thought we all agreed; men are not the answer.
Alexandra
Well, someone...
Sukie
...new.
Alexandra
Yes.
Sukie
And mysterious.
Alexandra
Artistic.
Sukie
Simple and honest. You know; like a caveman.
Alexandra
But devastatingly handsome.
Sukie
A prince on horseback.
Jane
In Eastwick? We don't even have our own post office.
Alexandra
Well, there's no harm in dreaming, is there?
Alexandra
If I could ask,
Jane
If I could choose,
Sukie
What sort of man might fill the shoes
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
I'd like to find inside my door?
Alexandra
What man might fill those Tom McAnn's?
Sukie
What would I ask?
Alexandra
Yes, what indeed?
Jane
What would I dare?
Sukie
What would I dare?
Alexandra
I'd ask the moon...
Jane
I'd ask the moon...
Sukie
I'd ask...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
If I thought the moon would care...
(Behind them, a GIANT NEW MOON appears, glowing.)
Alexandra (lifting her glass)
To the power of positive thinking.
Sukie
Yummy.
Alexandra
I close my eyes and I see him there.
Jane / Sukie
Everything I dreamed of.
Alexandra
Warm, attentive...
Jane
Smooth, successful...
Sukie
Stalwart and strong...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
I close my eyes and it's past compare.
Alexandra
Everything I hoped for...
Jane
Everything I pictured...
Sukie
Everything I wanted...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
All along.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
Make him mine.
Make him mine.
Make him handsome as the devil,
yet perfectly divine.
Make him mine.
The ultimate companion,
the ideal design.
All manner of man in one man –
make him mine.
Alexandra
I close my eyes, and I see him there;
a stranger at the doorstep.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
Dark, enchanted...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
Tall and tender...
Firm and fine.
Alexandra
I close my eyes, and it's so unfair;
that he's not really here yet.
Jane
Perfect and polished...
Sukie
The pick of the litter...
Alexandra
The zenith of men...
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
From toe to crown.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
Make him mine.
Make him mine.
If he's sinful, let me be the one
to twist the spine.
Make him mine.
The ultimate companion,
the ideal design.
All manner of man in one man –
make him mine.
Jane
If I close my eyes and make a wish,
Alexandra
He's here.
Sukie
And so is the bedroom.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
In the morning, I shall wake beside him.
And as we’re making toast,
he will say to me:
“Alexandra.”
“No, Jane.”
“No, Sukie.”
I shall want to punch him, but instead,
I shall take his hand in mine.
Take his hand in mine.
I’ll say, “Yes, you’re mine. Mine.”
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
Make him mine.
Mine!
Mine!
Mine!
Mine!
Mine!
Mine!
Make him mine!
(The music fades. Thunder rumbles outside, and the wind begins to howl. The storm grows louder. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, startled by the sudden power of the storm, look at each other. A strange realization creeps over them.)
Sukie
Did we... do that?
Jane
I think... maybe we did.
Alexandra
We asked for him.
Sukie
So... now what?
Jane
We wait.
(Lights fade as the storm swirls around them, intensifying. The stage goes dark.)
ACT ONE, SCENE THREE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene changes to the Town Square. The storm has subsided. Townspeople begin to gather, exchanging gossip.)
Felicia (to her husband Clyde)
Have you heard, Clyde? There’s a new man in town.
Gina
He’s staying at the Lenox House.
Greta
I heard he’s single.
Gina
I heard he’s rich.
Felicia
Ladies, ladies! What Eastwick needs right now is dignity and decency, not scandal.
Clyde
Who is he, anyway?
Felicia
He’s a mystery. Came in on the train late last night. No one saw him, no one spoke to him... yet already, everyone knows he’s here.
Townspeople
Whispering among themselves. A stranger... a stranger...
Felicia
He could be dangerous.
Gina
Or he could be charming.
Felicia
Or he could be a threat to our morals.
Greta
Or he could be exactly what Eastwick has been needing.
Townspeople (growing excited)
A stranger! A stranger!
(Darryl Van Horne appears, unseen by the crowd, observing them with amusement.)
Felicia
Let us remember who we are, friends. We are Eastwick, after all.
(Darryl smiles, enjoying their reaction. Lights shift as he exits, leaving the townspeople to speculate about him.)
ACT ONE, SCENE FOUR: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(The scene shifts to the Lennox House. Darryl Van Horne, charming yet mysterious, stands alone in the grand, slightly decrepit living room. He looks around, surveying his new domain, and smiles to himself.)
Darryl
(to himself)
Well, well, Eastwick... let’s see what you've got.
(He begins to explore the room, testing the furniture, inspecting the space. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, all hesitant and curious, approach the house. They hover outside, whispering.)
Alexandra
Are you sure he’s home?
Sukie
I saw him arrive with the movers this morning.
Jane
Maybe we should come back later.
Sukie
No way. We wished for this, didn’t we?
Alexandra
Well, I didn’t exactly wish for a stranger in a crumbling mansion, but... here we are.
(Darryl notices them through the window and opens the door with a wide, mischievous smile.)
Darryl
Well, hello there, ladies. Are you lost?
Sukie
Oh, no, we’re not lost. We... we wanted to, uh, welcome you to Eastwick.
Darryl
How neighborly of you. Why don’t you come inside? The place could use a little feminine energy.
(He steps aside, inviting them in. Hesitantly, they enter and look around in awe at the grand, if dusty, interior.)
Jane
It’s... uh... quite spacious.
Darryl
That’s one way of putting it. Needs a little love, don’t you think?
Alexandra
More like a whole lot of work.
Darryl
Ah, work! My favorite word. So, tell me, what is it you lovely ladies do for work?
Sukie
I’m a journalist, Jane here’s a cellist, and Alex is a sculptor.
Darryl
Artists! How wonderful. Creative spirits all around. Exactly what I need.
Alexandra
You... need us?
Darryl
Oh, everyone needs a little inspiration, don’t they? And what better inspiration than three beautiful, talented women?
Jane
(flustered)
Well, I don’t know about all that.
Darryl
Don’t sell yourself short. (pauses, looking at each of them in turn) Tell me, have you ladies ever wished for something... more?
(They exchange a glance, caught off guard by his directness.)
Sukie
Well, yes. Sometimes.
Darryl
Sometimes. Isn’t that the trouble with life? Always settling for “sometimes.” I say, if you want something, take it. The world is yours for the taking.
Alexandra
Is that how you see it?
Darryl
Why not? Life’s too short for hesitation, don’t you think?
(The women exchange looks, intrigued but unsure.)
Darryl
(smiling)
You know, I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship.
(Lights fade as they continue talking, and the scene transitions.)
ACT ONE, SCENE FIVE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the Eastwick Town Square. Townspeople are gathered, gossiping excitedly about Darryl Van Horne. Felicia, as always, is at the center, spreading her thoughts on the newcomer.)
Felicia
Ladies and gentlemen, I’m telling you, we must be cautious. This Darryl Van Horne is an unknown entity, a man without roots, without history.
Clyde
You’re overreacting, Felicia. He’s just one man.
Felicia
One man with a lot of influence, Clyde. The women in this town are practically drooling over him.
Gina
I heard he invited some of our ladies to his house last night.
Greta
Oh, yes. Sukie, Jane, and Alexandra were seen leaving there after dark.
Felicia
It’s disgraceful. They’re behaving like lovesick teenagers.
Gina
Can you blame them? He is handsome.
Felicia
Handsome? Handsome doesn’t give him a free pass to corrupt the morals of Eastwick.
(The townspeople murmur in agreement. Darryl himself appears at the edge of the square, listening with a wry smile, clearly amused by their talk.)
Darryl
(to himself)
Ah, the good people of Eastwick, so welcoming, so accepting.
(He steps forward, startling the group as they notice him.)
Darryl
Good morning, friends! I hear I’m the topic of conversation. Always nice to be so... popular.
Felicia
(stiffly)
Mr. Van Horne, it’s only natural for a small town to take an interest in new residents.
Darryl
Of course, Mrs. Gabriel, I understand. Just as I’m taking an interest in all of you. I think we’re going to get along splendidly.
(He flashes a disarming smile. Felicia, clearly unsettled, regains her composure and gives him a tight smile.)
Felicia
Yes, well, welcome to Eastwick.
(She walks off with Clyde, the townspeople following, leaving Darryl standing alone. He laughs to himself, enjoying the tension he’s created.)
Darryl
(to himself)
Oh, yes. This is going to be fun.
ACT ONE, SCENE SIX: ALEXANDRA’S STUDIO
(The scene shifts to Alexandra’s art studio. She’s working on a sculpture when Darryl enters unannounced, catching her by surprise.)
Alexandra
Darryl! You scared me.
Darryl
Apologies, my dear. I just couldn’t stay away. Something about you... something about this place...
Alexandra
Well, I wasn’t expecting company.
Darryl
Don’t mind me. Keep working. I love to watch an artist in her element.
(She hesitates but resumes her work, aware of his intense gaze on her.)
Darryl
You know, Alex, I see something in you. A power, a passion... waiting to be unleashed.
Alexandra
I’m just a sculptor, Darryl.
Darryl
Oh, I think you’re much more than that. I think you have desires, needs, longings...
Alexandra
I don’t know what you mean.
Darryl
Don’t you? Have you ever let yourself dream, Alex? Truly dream?
(She stops, his words clearly striking a chord.)
Darryl
You have the power to shape the world around you, Alex. You just need the right... inspiration.
Alexandra
And you think you’re that inspiration?
Darryl
I don’t think, my dear. I know.
(He steps closer to her, and the chemistry between them is palpable. She’s both drawn to and wary of him, but she doesn’t pull away.)
Alexandra
Darryl... I...
Darryl
Shh. Don’t say a word. Just... imagine.
(He leans in, their faces inches apart as the lights fade on the scene.)
ACT ONE, SCENE SEVEN: JANE’S MUSIC ROOM
(The scene shifts to Jane’s music room. She’s practicing the cello when Darryl enters quietly, watching her play. Jane stops abruptly, startled by his presence.)
Jane
Darryl! You startled me.
Darryl
Apologies, Jane. I didn’t mean to interrupt such... beautiful music.
Jane
It’s just practice. Nothing special.
Darryl
Don’t sell yourself short. I could hear that passion from a mile away. It’s... powerful.
Jane
(embarrassed)
Thank you. I suppose I do lose myself in it sometimes.
Darryl
That’s the way it should be. Music... art... they’re meant to pull you in, take you over, make you feel alive. Don’t you agree?
Jane
Yes. Sometimes, it feels like the only thing that’s truly mine.
Darryl
Then let it consume you, Jane. Don’t hold back. You have so much inside you, so much longing.
Jane
(laughs nervously)
I’m not sure you know me well enough to say that.
Darryl
I think I know you better than you realize. (He steps closer, his gaze intense.) There’s a fire in you, Jane. A hunger... for something more. You just need to let it out.
(Jane is visibly affected by his words, her guard lowering as he speaks.)
Jane
And how do you propose I do that?
Darryl
Simple. Stop playing by everyone else’s rules. Play by your own. Follow your desires... and see where they lead.
(He takes her hand, guiding it back to the cello bow, encouraging her to play with abandon. Jane closes her eyes and begins to play, passionately, freely. Darryl watches, a satisfied smile on his face as the lights fade.)
ACT ONE, SCENE EIGHT: SUKIE’S LIVING ROOM
(The scene shifts to Sukie’s living room. She’s typing on her typewriter, working on a story for the newspaper, when there’s a knock at the door. She opens it to find Darryl standing there, holding a bouquet of wildflowers.)
Sukie
Darryl! What are you doing here?
Darryl
Bringing a little beauty to a beautiful lady. (He hands her the flowers.)
Sukie
Oh, they’re lovely! Thank you. But... why me?
Darryl
Why not you? You’re a writer, aren’t you? You see the world in a way others don’t. That’s... intriguing.
Sukie
Well, I don’t know if I’d say that.
Darryl
I would. I can tell you have stories inside you, stories waiting to be told. And I want to know them.
Sukie
(blushing)
I don’t think anyone’s ever said that to me before.
Darryl
Then they’re fools. A woman like you deserves to be heard. Every thought, every feeling, every dream.
(He steps closer, his charm working on her as she grows more relaxed and open.)
Sukie
Darryl... you don’t know what you’re doing to me.
Darryl
Oh, I think I do. I think you’ve been waiting for this, for someone who truly sees you.
Sukie
Maybe... maybe I have.
Darryl
Then let yourself feel it. Don’t hold back.
(They share a charged moment as Sukie looks into his eyes, clearly swept up in the moment. The lights slowly fade as they draw closer to each other.)
ACT ONE, SCENE NINE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the Eastwick Town Square. Townspeople are gathered, buzzing with gossip about Darryl and his interactions with Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie. Felicia, as usual, is at the center of it all, stoking the flames.)
Felicia
I tell you, it’s scandalous! He’s wormed his way into the lives of those three women, and they’re practically falling at his feet.
Gina
Did you see them at church last Sunday? They barely acknowledged anyone.
Greta
And have you heard the music coming from Jane’s house? It’s... wild.
Felicia
Eastwick is going to hell in a handbasket, mark my words. Darryl Van Horne is a corrupting influence on this town.
Clyde
Felicia, maybe you’re overreacting. He’s just one man.
Felicia
One man with far too much charm for his own good! This town has rules, standards! And I intend to see they’re upheld.
(The townspeople murmur in agreement, though some seem curious rather than concerned. As they disperse, Felicia looks after them with a determined glare, clearly not finished with the matter.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TEN: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(The scene shifts to the Lennox House. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are all gathered there with Darryl. The atmosphere is relaxed, almost decadent, as they enjoy drinks and conversation. Darryl is clearly reveling in the attention.)
Darryl
Ladies, I have to say, you’ve brightened up this old house. It’s been far too long since I’ve had such delightful company.
Alexandra
Well, it’s been a long time since we’ve had someone... like you in Eastwick.
Jane
Yes, you’re... different, Darryl.
Darryl
Different? I’ll take that as a compliment.
Sukie
It is. You’ve... you’ve changed things around here. You’ve changed us.
Darryl
Oh, I haven’t done anything you didn’t already want. I just... encouraged you to be yourselves.
Alexandra
But we were ourselves before, weren’t we?
Darryl
Were you? Or were you the people everyone else expected you to be?
(They consider this, his words clearly hitting a nerve. Each of them seems lost in thought for a moment, contemplating his influence.)
Jane
Maybe you’re right. Maybe we were... restrained.
Sukie
I feel... different. Like I’m finally seeing things clearly.
Darryl
That’s because you are. You’re seeing yourselves for the first time. And that, my dear ladies, is the most beautiful sight in the world.
(They share a moment of connection, each feeling empowered and liberated. Darryl watches them with satisfaction, knowing he’s planted seeds of change in each of them.)
ACT ONE, SCENE ELEVEN: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene returns to the Town Square, where the townspeople gather once again, clearly disturbed by the recent changes in Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie. Felicia is as vocal as ever, rallying them with her accusations.)
Felicia
I tell you, this man is the devil himself! Look at what he’s done to those women! They’re flaunting themselves, ignoring the decency of this town.
Gina
They do seem... different.
Greta
And not necessarily in a good way.
Felicia
Eastwick has always had standards, morals! Are we going to let one man tear down everything we’ve built?
Clyde
Felicia, maybe it’s not as bad as you think.
Felicia
Clyde, you’re blind to what’s right in front of you! If we don’t act, this town will be lost.
(The townspeople murmur, a mix of agreement and hesitation. Felicia’s influence is strong, but some seem unsure whether Darryl’s presence is truly a threat.)
Felicia
We must stand together! We must protect Eastwick from this... this corrupter!
(The townspeople nod, bolstered by Felicia’s fervor as the scene fades.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWELVE: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(The scene shifts back to the Lennox House. Darryl, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are gathered in the grand living room, enjoying each other’s company. The atmosphere is charged, almost electric, as they laugh and share stories.)
Darryl
You know, I have to say, you ladies are full of surprises. Eastwick’s best-kept secrets.
Alexandra
Well, we don’t get to have much fun around here. Eastwick’s not exactly... exciting.
Sukie
Until now.
Jane
Yes, Darryl, you’ve... brought something out of us. Something we didn’t know was there.
Darryl
That’s what life is about, isn’t it? Uncovering what’s hidden, finding what’s been buried deep. Each of you has that spark, that... fire.
Sukie
Sometimes I feel like a different person with you.
Jane
Like I can do anything.
Alexandra
Be anyone.
Darryl
Exactly. Why settle for the life everyone else expects? Live the life you want. Be bold. Be brave.
(They exchange looks, feeling empowered by his words. Darryl, sensing the moment, stands and raises his glass.)
Darryl
To us. To new beginnings and... endless possibilities.
Alexandra / Jane / Sukie
To us.
(They clink glasses, and the sense of camaraderie deepens. Darryl smiles, knowing he has them under his spell.)
Darryl
Now, tell me, ladies. What is it you truly desire? What is it you’ve never dared to say out loud?
(They hesitate, unsure, but feeling the pull of his words.)
Sukie
I want... to be seen. Really seen.
Jane
I want to break free from everything that’s held me back.
Alexandra
I want... power. Control.
Darryl
Then take it. Don’t wait for permission. Claim what’s yours.
(They’re drawn to his intensity, captivated by the promise of freedom and transformation.)
ACT ONE, SCENE THIRTEEN: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the Town Square. Felicia stands at the center, rallying the townspeople, who seem increasingly uneasy about Darryl and the changes he’s brought.)
Felicia
This has gone on long enough! Look at the state of our town! This man has brought nothing but chaos, and those women... those women are practically bewitched!
Gina
They’re not the same. I barely recognize them.
Greta
And they’re flaunting it, too. No shame at all.
Felicia
That’s exactly what I mean! They’re completely under his spell. And it’s affecting everyone else. Our morals, our decency... we’re losing everything that makes Eastwick what it is.
Clyde
What do you propose we do, Felicia?
Felicia
We must stand against him. We must make it clear that his kind of influence is not welcome here.
(The townspeople murmur, some nodding in agreement, others uncertain but swayed by Felicia’s passion.)
Felicia
We have to protect our town, our families, our way of life. Are you with me?
(The townspeople begin to rally around her, voices rising as they join in her cause.)
Townspeople
Yes! Protect Eastwick!
(They march off with determination, leaving the stage empty and quiet.)
ACT ONE, SCENE FOURTEEN: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Back at the Lennox House, Darryl and the three women continue their evening together. They’re more relaxed, liberated, and bold, clearly under Darryl’s influence.)
Darryl
So, tell me, my dear witches. Do you feel different?
Alexandra
More alive than I ever have.
Jane
It’s like I’ve been asleep, and now... I’m finally awake.
Sukie
And I don’t want it to end.
Darryl
Then don’t let it. This feeling, this power – it’s all yours. You’ve only just begun to scratch the surface.
(They look at him, mesmerized, feeling stronger, bolder, and ready for whatever comes next.)
ACT ONE, SCENE FIFTEEN: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the Eastwick Town Square, where a storm seems to be brewing both literally and figuratively. The townspeople gather under Felicia’s leadership, all looking tense and determined. Thunder rumbles ominously.)
Felicia
This man – this Darryl Van Horne – has brought nothing but ruin to our town. And we have allowed it to go on far too long.
Clyde
What do you want us to do, Felicia?
Felicia
We need to confront him. Show him that Eastwick will not stand for this... this corruption.
Gina
But... how do we stop him? He’s so... persuasive.
Felicia
That’s what he wants you to think. But if we stand together, if we hold fast to what’s right, he’ll have no power over us.
(The crowd murmurs, bolstered by Felicia’s words. They nod, showing resolve.)
Felicia
Are you with me, Eastwick?
Townspeople
Yes!
Felicia
Then let’s put an end to this.
(The townspeople march off with determination, ready to confront Darryl. Thunder rumbles louder as they disappear from view.)
ACT ONE, SCENE SIXTEEN: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Inside the Lennox House, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are gathered with Darryl. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, but the tension from outside is slowly creeping in as the storm rages.)
Alexandra
Do you hear that? Sounds like a storm’s coming.
Darryl
Let it come. We’re safe here, aren’t we?
Sukie
Safe, yes. But... do you ever feel like everyone is... watching us?
Darryl
Let them watch. What we have here is something special, something they’ll never understand.
Jane
But, Darryl, they’re talking about us. About... what we’re doing.
Darryl
And what are we doing? Living? Being ourselves? That’s nothing to be ashamed of.
Alexandra
Sometimes, I wonder if... if maybe we’re tempting fate.
Darryl
Fate? Fate is just a word people use to excuse their fear. We’re not meant to live in fear, are we?
(He takes each of their hands, looking them in the eye, reassuring them.)
Darryl
Trust me. Everything we’re doing... it’s exactly what you wanted. What you wished for.
(They look at each other, reassured but still a bit uneasy. The storm outside intensifies, and the lights dim as thunder crashes, signaling the rising tension.)
ACT ONE, SCENE SEVENTEEN: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the town square, where the townspeople have gathered, facing the Lennox House. The storm is in full force now, with lightning flashing and thunder crashing. Felicia stands at the front, resolute.)
Felicia
Darryl Van Horne! Come out and face us!
(There’s silence as they wait for a response. After a moment, Darryl steps out onto the porch of the Lennox House, casually observing the crowd with a smirk.)
Darryl
What’s this? A welcoming committee?
Felicia
You know exactly why we’re here. You’ve poisoned this town, corrupted its people. And we’re here to put a stop to it.
Darryl
Oh, is that so? And how do you plan to do that, Felicia?
Felicia
We stand together. We stand for Eastwick, for our families, for decency.
Darryl
Decency? (laughs) Decency is just another word for fear. You’re all afraid – afraid of life, of freedom, of anything that doesn’t fit into your neat little boxes.
Townspeople
(murmuring, uneasy)
Felicia
You’re wrong, Darryl. Eastwick stands for something more. And we won’t let you take that from us.
Darryl
You can try, Felicia. But I think you’ll find that these ladies... my dear friends... have no desire to go back to your narrow little world.
(He gestures behind him, and Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie appear, standing with him, their expressions defiant. The townspeople gasp, shocked by their transformation.)
Felicia
Ladies, can’t you see? He’s using you. Manipulating you!
Alexandra
No, Felicia. For the first time, we’re doing exactly what we want.
Jane
We’re free. We’re finally free.
Sukie
And we’re not going back.
(The crowd stirs, clearly unsettled by their words, but Darryl stands tall, smiling proudly. Thunder crashes as the townspeople exchange looks of doubt and fear, realizing they may have lost their hold on Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie.)
Felicia
(to the crowd, desperate)
Can’t you see what he’s done to them? This man is dangerous. He’s twisted their minds!
(The storm rages as the tension between Darryl, the women, and the townspeople reaches a boiling point. The lights dim, leaving the scene in ominous darkness.)
ACT ONE, SCENE EIGHTEEN: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Inside the Lennox House, Darryl, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are gathered, reflecting on the events in the town square. The tension outside has clearly affected them, and the storm continues to rage.)
Sukie
Did you see their faces? They looked at us like we were... monsters.
Jane
Maybe we are. Maybe we’ve become something... unnatural.
Darryl
Unnatural? No. You’re finally yourselves. Powerful, fearless. They can’t stand it because they can’t control it.
Alexandra
But what if they’re right? What if we’ve gone too far?
Darryl
Too far? You’re just getting started. Don’t you see? The people of Eastwick are afraid because they’re small-minded. They don’t understand strength, independence. They don’t understand you.
Jane
But we were like them once. We didn’t feel this... this anger.
Darryl
That’s because you were caged. All your lives, you’ve been told to behave, to conform, to fit in. And now, for the first time, you’re free.
Sukie
But freedom... it feels dangerous.
Darryl
It’s only dangerous to those who want to control you. To people like Felicia Gabriel. She can’t stand that you’re stronger than she is.
Alexandra
And what do we do now, Darryl?
Darryl
Now? Now you embrace it. Embrace who you are. Let them talk, let them judge. You don’t need them. All you need... is each other.
(They look at each other, feeling both the power and the danger of their newfound freedom. Slowly, they nod, acknowledging the change within them. They are resolved.)
ACT ONE, SCENE NINETEEN: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the Town Square. Felicia is rallying the townspeople once more, determined to rid Eastwick of Darryl’s influence.)
Felicia
This has gone on long enough. We can’t let this man destroy everything we hold dear.
Gina
But Felicia, what can we do? He’s... he’s too powerful.
Felicia
He’s only powerful because we’ve allowed him to be. If we stand united, we can push him out of Eastwick.
Greta
But the women... Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie... they’re with him. They’ve changed.
Felicia
Then we’ll save them too. They’re still part of this town, part of our community. And we can’t let them fall into darkness.
(The townspeople murmur, some hesitant, others emboldened by Felicia’s passion.)
Clyde
So, what do we do, Felicia?
Felicia
We confront him. We make it clear that he’s not welcome here. And if he refuses to leave... we’ll take matters into our own hands.
(The crowd nods, growing more resolute. They gather together, preparing to confront Darryl and reclaim their town.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Back at the Lennox House, Darryl is alone, pacing as he senses the tension building outside. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie enter, looking troubled.)
Alexandra
Darryl, something’s happening. The town... they’re coming for us.
Darryl
Let them come. They can’t hurt us.
Jane
But they’re scared, Darryl. People do terrible things when they’re scared.
Darryl
Let them be scared. That’s their problem, not ours.
Sukie
But we live here, Darryl. This is our town too.
Darryl
And you’re letting them push you around? You’re more powerful than they are. Don’t you see that?
(They exchange uneasy looks, feeling torn between Darryl’s influence and their ties to the community.)
Alexandra
Maybe... maybe we should try to make peace.
Darryl
Peace? With people who want to control you? To cage you? No, my dear, that’s not peace. That’s surrender.
Jane
Then what do you suggest we do?
Darryl
Stand your ground. Show them that you’re not afraid. Show them that you’re stronger than they are.
(They hesitate, feeling the weight of his words. Outside, the townspeople begin to gather, their voices rising as they approach the house. Darryl stands firm, unshaken.)
Darryl
This is your moment, ladies. Are you ready to claim what’s yours?
(They look at each other, uncertain but resolute. The lights fade as the storm continues to rage outside.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY-ONE: OUTSIDE THE LENNOX HOUSE
(The scene shifts outside the Lennox House. The townspeople have gathered, led by Felicia, their faces determined and resolute as they prepare to confront Darryl and the women. Thunder crashes overhead, intensifying the scene.)
Felicia
Darryl Van Horne! Come out! Face us if you dare!
(There’s a tense silence as they wait. Finally, Darryl steps out onto the front porch, flanked by Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie. The townspeople gasp, taken aback by their boldness and unflinching confidence.)
Darryl
So... here you are. A mob, come to tear down the walls of anyone who doesn’t fit neatly into your little world.
Felicia
You’ve poisoned our town, Mr. Van Horne. Corrupted our people. And we’re here to put an end to it.
Darryl
Corruption? Poison? Oh, no, Felicia. I simply showed these ladies what it means to be free.
Felicia
(to the women)
Can’t you see? He’s using you! He’s twisted you against everything we stand for.
Alexandra
No, Felicia. He hasn’t twisted anything. For the first time, we’re living by our own rules.
Jane
We’re not afraid anymore.
Sukie
And we’re not going back.
Felicia
(to the crowd)
This is madness! Can’t you see how he’s deceived them?
(The crowd murmurs, some fearful, others uncertain. Darryl smiles, sensing his hold over Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie has made them stronger, more defiant.)
Darryl
Face it, Felicia. Your little empire is crumbling. These women don’t need your approval. They don’t need anyone’s approval.
Felicia
This isn’t over, Van Horne. Eastwick will not fall under your spell.
Darryl
Oh, but it already has.
(He raises his hand, as if controlling the storm. Thunder crashes, and the winds intensify. The townspeople back away, clearly frightened. Felicia glares at him, defiant but visibly shaken.)
Felicia
You may have them fooled, but you don’t scare me.
Darryl
(smirking)
Oh, but you should be scared, Felicia. Very scared.
(With that, the lights flicker, and the storm reaches a peak. Felicia and the townspeople retreat, their fear and anger palpable. Darryl turns to Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, who look at him with a mix of awe and uncertainty.)
Darryl
See? Power. That’s what they fear. That’s what you have.
Alexandra
But... at what cost?
Darryl
There’s always a price. The question is... are you willing to pay it?
(They look at each other, realizing the magnitude of what they’ve become involved in as the scene fades.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY-TWO: INSIDE THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Back inside the Lennox House, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie sit together, visibly shaken by the confrontation with the townspeople. Darryl watches them, seemingly unfazed.)
Jane
I didn’t realize how... intense this would be.
Sukie
They looked at us like we were... like we were evil.
Darryl
Let them look. They don’t understand. They never will.
Alexandra
But they’re our neighbors, Darryl. Our friends.
Darryl
Friends? Neighbors? Those people would tear you down the first chance they get. You owe them nothing.
Sukie
But... maybe we’ve gone too far.
Darryl
Too far? No. You’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible. Don’t you want more? Don’t you want everything?
(They hesitate, feeling the lure of his words but also the weight of their actions. Darryl senses their doubt and leans in, his voice low and persuasive.)
Darryl
Think about it. The power, the freedom, the thrill of living without limits. Isn’t that what you wanted?
Jane
(whispering)
I don’t know anymore.
Alexandra
Maybe... maybe it’s time to stop.
Darryl
Stop? After everything we’ve done? Everything we’ve become? You can’t go back now. You’re stronger than that. You’re better than that.
(They exchange troubled glances, clearly torn between their old lives and the freedom Darryl offers. The lights dim, leaving them in shadow as they contemplate their choices.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY-THREE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the Town Square. Felicia stands with Clyde and the townspeople, visibly shaken but determined. They discuss what to do next.)
Felicia
This isn’t just about Darryl Van Horne anymore. Those women... they’re under his spell. We have to save them before it’s too late.
Gina
But Felicia, they don’t want to be saved. They’re... different now.
Greta
It’s like they don’t even care about the town anymore. About us.
Felicia
That’s because he’s poisoned their minds. He’s given them a taste of something... unnatural. And they can’t see the danger.
Clyde
But how do we help them if they don’t want our help?
Felicia
We don’t give them a choice. This is our town. And we won’t let it be taken over by someone like him.
(The townspeople nod in agreement, rallying behind Felicia as their leader. She raises her hands, her voice filled with conviction.)
Felicia
Tonight, we make a stand. For Eastwick. For everything we hold dear.
Townspeople
(echoing)
For Eastwick!
(The townspeople disperse, preparing for whatever confrontation may come. Thunder rumbles ominously as the scene fades.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY-FOUR: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Inside the Lennox House, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie sit together in a somber mood. The power they felt earlier now feels more like a burden. Darryl enters, sensing their unease.)
Darryl
What’s with the long faces? This is supposed to be a celebration.
Alexandra
It doesn’t feel like a celebration anymore, Darryl. It feels... wrong.
Darryl
Wrong? You’ve just started living. Don’t let their small minds pull you down.
Jane
But we used to be like them, Darryl. Ordinary, yes, but... happy.
Darryl
Happy? Trapped in a cage, following everyone else’s rules? That’s not happiness. That’s surrender.
Sukie
Maybe, but... I miss the way things were. Before all of this.
Darryl
What you’re feeling is fear. Fear of your own power. They’ve taught you to be ashamed of it. To hide it. But I say... embrace it.
(They look at each other, their inner conflict evident. Darryl steps closer, his voice soft but commanding.)
Darryl
Don’t you want to see what you’re truly capable of? Don’t you want to live without boundaries?
(They hesitate, feeling the allure of his words, but also the weight of the changes they’ve undergone.)
Alexandra
I don’t know, Darryl. I don’t know if this is what we wanted.
Darryl
(firmly)
It’s too late to turn back now. You’ve tasted freedom. Real freedom. And that’s something they’ll never understand.
(Thunder rumbles, and the storm outside intensifies as they each look inward, wrestling with their choices.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY-FIVE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene returns to the Town Square. The townspeople are gathered, torches in hand, ready to confront Darryl and the women. Felicia stands at the front, determined to reclaim Eastwick.)
Felicia
Tonight, we take back our town. We protect our values, our families, our way of life.
Clyde
But what if they fight back?
Felicia
Then we’ll stand together. We’ll show them that Eastwick is stronger than any one man.
Townspeople
(murmuring agreement)
Felicia
We won’t let him destroy what we’ve built here. Not now, not ever.
(The townspeople cheer, emboldened by Felicia’s words. Together, they march toward the Lennox House, prepared for a final confrontation. The storm rages as they disappear from view, leaving the stage in darkness.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY-SIX: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Inside the Lennox House, Darryl, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are seated, feeling the intensity of the storm and the looming tension with the townspeople. The thunder grows louder, and a sense of unease fills the room.)
Alexandra
They’re coming, aren’t they?
Jane
I can feel it. They’re not going to let us go on like this.
Darryl
Let them come. This is our home now. They have no right to take it from us.
Sukie
But what if they hurt us, Darryl? What if they try to...?
Darryl
Then we’ll show them who has the real power. We’re not helpless anymore, ladies. We’re stronger than all of them put together.
(They exchange looks, unsure but emboldened by Darryl’s words. Outside, the angry shouts of the townspeople grow louder as they approach the house.)
Alexandra
Darryl, maybe... maybe this has gone too far.
Darryl
Too far? You wanted freedom. You wanted to break free from their judgment, their control. This is the price of power.
Jane
But at what cost?
Darryl
(smiling, almost sinister)
Everything comes at a cost, my dear. The question is... are you willing to pay it?
(There’s a loud bang on the door as the townspeople demand to be let in. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie look at each other, realizing the gravity of their situation.)
Sukie
Darryl... I don’t know if we’re ready for this.
Darryl
Ready or not, here they come. Stand tall. Show them that you’re not afraid.
(He moves toward the door, with Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie following, steeling themselves for what’s to come. The lights dim as they prepare to face the townspeople.)
ACT ONE, SCENE TWENTY-SEVEN: OUTSIDE THE LENNOX HOUSE
(The scene shifts outside. The townspeople stand gathered at the foot of the Lennox House steps, torches in hand, led by Felicia. They chant in anger, demanding Darryl and the women face them.)
Felicia
Darryl Van Horne, come out! We know what you’ve done. We know the hold you have on these women, and we won’t stand for it any longer.
Townspeople
Come out! Face us!
(The door creaks open, and Darryl steps out onto the porch, facing the crowd with an amused expression. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie stand behind him, looking defiant but visibly nervous.)
Darryl
So, here you are. A good old-fashioned mob, ready to burn down what you don’t understand.
Felicia
We understand plenty, Mr. Van Horne. We understand that you’re a danger to this town and to the people in it.
Darryl
Danger? Oh, please. The only danger here is your fear, your small-mindedness.
Felicia
And you three... (she addresses Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie) Can’t you see what he’s done to you? He’s taken everything you are and twisted it.
Alexandra
No, Felicia. For the first time, we’re exactly who we want to be.
Jane
We’re done living by your rules.
Sukie
We’re free.
Felicia
Free? You call this freedom? You’re under his spell, and you don’t even see it.
Darryl
(laughing)
Oh, Felicia, your jealousy is showing. Just because you’ve never had the courage to live your own life...
Felicia
(furious)
This isn’t about me! This is about protecting Eastwick from people like you. You’re a poison, Darryl Van Horne. And we’re here to root you out.
Townspeople
(shouting)
Yes! Get out of Eastwick!
Darryl
(raising his voice)
You think you can scare me? You think your torches and your threats will change anything? These women are stronger than you’ll ever be.
Felicia
We’re not scared of you, Darryl. Not anymore. We want you gone.
(There’s a tense standoff as the townspeople and Darryl stare each other down. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie stand by Darryl’s side, but they exchange uneasy glances, feeling the pressure of the confrontation.)
Alexandra
Maybe... maybe this isn’t worth it.
Darryl
Don’t give in. They want to break you. Stand with me, and you’ll never have to bow to them again.
(The townspeople shout, growing louder, and the storm intensifies. Thunder crashes, and lightning flashes, casting an eerie glow over the scene.)
Felicia
This is your last chance, Darryl. Leave Eastwick... or face the consequences.
Darryl
(smiling confidently)
I think I’ll stay.
(The storm reaches its peak, and the lights fade to black as the tension hangs heavy in the air, setting the stage for the final conflict.)
End of Act One
====================================================
ACT TWO, SCENE ONE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene opens on the Town Square the morning after the confrontation. The storm has passed, and the square is quiet and tense. The townspeople gather, whispering to each other about the previous night’s events.)
Gina
Did you see them last night? Standing with him like they were... possessed.
Greta
It was eerie. Like they weren’t even themselves anymore.
Clyde
Maybe we pushed too hard. Maybe confronting them wasn’t the answer.
Felicia
(interrupting, determined)
No. We did what was right. He has a hold over them, and we have to break it. For their own good.
Gina
But what if they don’t want to be saved?
Felicia
Sometimes people don’t know what’s best for them. It’s up to us to protect them – even from themselves.
(The townspeople murmur in agreement, but a sense of doubt lingers. They disperse slowly, casting worried glances toward the Lennox House.)
ACT TWO, SCENE TWO: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Inside the Lennox House, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are together, looking unsettled after the confrontation with the townspeople. Darryl enters, noticing their unease.)
Darryl
You’re quiet this morning. Let me guess – the mob got to you?
Jane
It was intense, Darryl. They looked at us like we were... strangers.
Alexandra
Like we were something to be feared.
Darryl
Good. Fear is power. Remember that.
Sukie
But what if we don’t want that kind of power? What if we just want things to go back to normal?
Darryl
Normal? Normal is a cage, a prison. You’re better than that. You’re above them now.
Alexandra
But they’re our friends, our neighbors.
Darryl
And they’d turn on you in a heartbeat if you stepped out of line. That’s what they did last night. They’re small, petty people. You don’t need them.
Jane
(hesitating)
I’m not so sure anymore.
Darryl
Look at yourselves. You’re free. Powerful. Don’t let their narrow minds hold you back.
(They look at each other, torn between their loyalty to their community and the seductive power they feel with Darryl. He senses their hesitation and steps closer, his voice soft and persuasive.)
Darryl
You’ve come this far. Don’t turn back now. Embrace who you are. Embrace what we have.
(They share an uneasy look but nod, feeling the allure of his words. The lights dim as they come to a quiet resolution.)
ACT TWO, SCENE THREE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene shifts back to the Town Square, where the townspeople are still reeling from the events of the previous night. Felicia is speaking to a small group, her voice filled with determination.)
Felicia
We can’t let him stay here, and we can’t let them stay under his spell. It’s up to us to take action.
Gina
But what can we do, Felicia? They’ve made their choice.
Felicia
Then we’ll show them that there are consequences. If they won’t come back willingly, we’ll make sure they have no choice.
(The townspeople nod, reluctantly agreeing with Felicia’s plan. They prepare to confront Darryl and the women one final time, their resolve hardening.)
ACT TWO, SCENE FOUR: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Back inside the Lennox House, Darryl senses the tension building outside and smiles, clearly enjoying the chaos he’s stirred up. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie, however, are visibly troubled.)
Alexandra
They’re not going to stop, are they?
Darryl
Let them come. We’re stronger than they are.
Sukie
But this isn’t what we wanted, Darryl. We didn’t ask for a war.
Darryl
Freedom isn’t free, my dear. It comes at a price. And sometimes, you have to be willing to fight for it.
Jane
But maybe this isn’t worth fighting for. Maybe... maybe we need to end this.
Darryl
End it? You think they’ll just let you go back to the way things were? They hate you now. They fear you. The only way to deal with them is to show them you’re stronger.
(They exchange looks, realizing the depth of the situation they’re in. Darryl’s influence is clear, but they’re beginning to see the cost of their choices.)
Alexandra
Darryl, maybe... maybe it’s time for you to leave.
(Darryl’s expression darkens, and he steps toward them, his voice low and threatening.)
Darryl
You think you can just send me away? After everything we’ve done? No, ladies, you’re mine. You made a wish, and I granted it. There’s no going back.
(They back away, suddenly fearful of the man they once saw as their liberator.)
Sukie
We didn’t ask for this.
Darryl
Oh, but you did. You wanted power. You wanted freedom. And now you have it.
(They look at each other, realizing the extent of Darryl’s hold over them and the danger they’re in. The lights dim as they come to a silent, fearful understanding.)
ACT TWO, SCENE FIVE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene returns to the Town Square. The townspeople, led by Felicia, are preparing for a final confrontation with Darryl and the women. They carry torches and look determined, yet a hint of fear is evident among them.)
Felicia
Tonight, we rid Eastwick of Darryl Van Horne once and for all. No more tricks, no more games.
Clyde
But what if he doesn’t go willingly?
Felicia
Then we make him leave. This is our town, and we’re taking it back.
Gina
And the women? What about Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie?
Felicia
They’ll come to their senses once he’s gone. They’re not themselves right now. He’s twisted them, but we’ll bring them back.
(The townspeople murmur in agreement, their resolve strengthening as they prepare to march toward the Lennox House for the final showdown.)
ACT TWO, SCENE SIX: THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Inside the Lennox House, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie gather together, visibly distressed. They’re beginning to understand the darkness of Darryl’s influence over them.)
Alexandra
This has gone too far. I can feel it... like a weight pressing down on us.
Jane
I don’t even recognize myself anymore. Is this what we wanted?
Sukie
No... we wanted freedom, but not like this.
(Darryl enters, sensing their fear and frustration. His demeanor is more threatening, his charm replaced with a cold, possessive edge.)
Darryl
What’s this? Second thoughts? Regrets?
Alexandra
Darryl, we’re done. This has to stop. You have to leave.
Darryl
Leave? You think you can just dismiss me like some... hired help?
Jane
We didn’t know it would be like this. We didn’t understand what we were asking for.
Darryl
Oh, but you did. You wanted power, and now you’re afraid of it. Typical.
Sukie
This isn’t power, Darryl. It’s... it’s poison. You’ve poisoned us.
(Darryl laughs, a dark and menacing sound that fills the room.)
Darryl
Poison? No, ladies. This is the truth. This is who you really are, stripped of all the lies you told yourselves.
Alexandra
We’re not yours to control, Darryl. We want our lives back.
Darryl
Too late. You made your choice, and now you have to live with it.
(The women look at each other, realizing that they may have to confront Darryl directly to break free. They stand together, their resolve hardening as they prepare to face him.)
ACT TWO, SCENE SEVEN: OUTSIDE THE LENNOX HOUSE
(Outside, the townspeople gather, led by Felicia, ready to confront Darryl and the women. They raise their torches, chanting as they approach the house.)
Felicia
Darryl Van Horne, come out! This is your last chance. Leave Eastwick, or face the consequences.
(Inside, Darryl hears them and smirks, turning to the women.)
Darryl
Well, well, looks like the mob is back. Afraid of what they can’t control.
Alexandra
Darryl, just go. If you care about us at all, you’ll leave and let us go back to our lives.
Darryl
Care about you? (laughs) Oh, I don’t think you understand. This isn’t about caring. This is about power.
Jane
Then we’ll stand against you. We’re done being your puppets.
(Darryl’s expression hardens as he realizes they are truly turning against him. He steps toward them, his presence dark and menacing.)
Darryl
You think you can defy me? I gave you everything you wanted. And now you’re turning on me?
Sukie
We’re not afraid of you, Darryl. Not anymore.
(Outside, Felicia and the townspeople chant louder, demanding that Darryl leave. The tension builds as they prepare for the final confrontation. Thunder rumbles, and the storm begins to rage again, echoing the conflict inside.)
ACT TWO, SCENE EIGHT: THE FINAL CONFRONTATION
(Inside the Lennox House, Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie face off against Darryl. The townspeople’s chants grow louder, and the storm outside reaches its peak. Darryl glares at the women, furious and betrayed.)
Darryl
You think you can cast me aside? After everything we’ve shared?
Alexandra
It’s over, Darryl. We don’t need you. We don’t want you.
Darryl
Fools. You don’t know what you’re giving up.
Jane
We’re giving up poison, Darryl. We’re taking back our lives.
Darryl
You’ll regret this. Every single one of you.
Sukie
Maybe. But at least we’ll be free.
(In a final act of defiance, the women stand together, facing Darryl with a newfound strength. Outside, the townspeople chant, their voices merging with the thunder as the storm reaches a climax. Darryl looks at them, realizing he has lost control, and slowly begins to fade, his power over them breaking.)
Darryl
You may have won this time, but remember... freedom always comes at a price.
(With one last look, Darryl disappears, leaving the women standing alone. The storm begins to calm, and the chants of the townspeople fade as peace settles over Eastwick once more.)
EPILOGUE: EASTWICK TOWN SQUARE
(The scene returns to the Town Square, where life has resumed its normal pace. Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie are together, reflecting on the events that transpired.)
Alexandra
It’s strange... how quiet everything feels now.
Jane
Like a weight’s been lifted.
Sukie
Do you think he’s really gone?
Alexandra
I think he’s gone from Eastwick. But maybe a part of him... what he awakened in us... will always be there.
Jane
Maybe that’s not such a bad thing. We’ve learned something about ourselves. About what we’re capable of.
Sukie
And about what we truly want.
(They share a quiet moment, understanding the journey they’ve been through and the strength they’ve found within themselves. The lights slowly fade as they walk off together, leaving Eastwick behind as a town forever changed.)
