BOOP! synopsis
BOOP! Synopsis - Broadway musical
Synopsis.
Act One.
In the black-and-white world of ToonTown, Betty Boop performs her latest cartoon short ("A Little Versatility"). An interviewer asks, “Who is the real Betty Boop?” She replies, “Whoever you want me to be!” The question lingers. At home, her Grampy is cooking with another one of his inventions. One such invention is a teleportation device. Betty expresses her wish to visit the real world, but Grampy says no.
After he falls asleep, Betty sings of a place where she’s not recognized ("Ordinary Day"). She uses the machine and lands in New York City, right in the middle of Comic Con.
There, Betty meets Dwayne, a jazz musician, and marvels at the vivid colors around her ("In Color"). She also befriends Trisha, a superfan dressed like her. To remain hidden, Betty adopts a fake name—Betsy Crampwhiler. But her fame follows her. Meanwhile, back in ToonTown, Grampy realizes she’s gone and panics ("Get Her Back!"). He and her loyal dog Pudgy head to New York using the same machine.
At Trisha’s home, Betty reconnects with Dwayne. He plays jazz; she sings ("I Speak Jazz"). Political candidate Raymond Demarest emerges, running for mayor. In a touching scene, Trisha confides that Betty gives her confidence ("Portrait of Betty"). Betty finally admits she is the real Betty Boop.
Scenes flip between ToonTown and New York. Betty and Dwayne share a moment in Times Square ("My New York"). Grampy reunites with Valentina, a former flame who now works for NASA. Sparks fly again between them ("A Cure for Love"). Later, Betty is invited to sing at Nelly’s club. The audience is amazed. Her identity can’t stay hidden anymore. She owns the moment ("Where I Wanna Be").
Act Two.
Betty now publicly exists in New York but regrets revealing herself. ToonTown citizens miss her deeply ("She’s Here/She’s Gone"). Raymond uses Betty for his campaign but silences her voice ("Win with Betty"). At Nelly’s, Dwayne laments his love for Betty, unsure she’s real ("She Knocks Me Out"). Trisha struggles with her self-worth and dresses as Betty to feel brave. Betty reassures her: she’s a hero already ("My Hero").
Grampy and Valentina confess their enduring love ("Together You and Me"). At Raymond’s office, he attempts to exploit Betty. She defends herself boldly ("Take It to the Next Level"). Betty proposes that Carol, Trisha’s mom, should run for mayor instead. Carol accepts ("The Campaign").
Betty and Dwayne reflect on the beauty of the present, not the future ("Why Look Around the Corner"). Grampy interrupts to warn her that ToonTown will vanish without her. As she travels back, Betty feels empty and lost ("Something to Shout About").
In ToonTown, Betty makes a final stand—no more running from men or fame. Suddenly, Valentina’s invention allows everyone to move freely between worlds. Dwayne joins Betty. They kiss. ToonTown bursts into color ("Color of Love").
