Mary Poppins musical (1964)

This musical has become extremely popular. It has been released for many times. As for the original West End production, it took place at Bristol Hippodrome in September 2004. Besides, it has also become the only Disney show, premiered in the Great Britain.

Concerning the Broadway’s version, it was created in 2006, soon after the tremendous success of West End. New Amsterdam Theatre hosted the premiere. There were several other productions as well, for instance, the Australian one. As the performances appeared to be adored by the audience, a touring production was also created. Some of the scenes were omitted to make the performances in small theaters possible. There were several international productions: in Sweden, Spain, The Netherlands & others. The production is based upon the book by P. L. Travers. The songs & music have been created by two brothers – R. B. & R. M. Shermans, Academy Award winners. Besides, A. Drewe & G. Stiles added additional lyrics & music. The script was created by J. Fellowes.

Another basis for this show was a movie created by Disney in 1964. Thus, the musical has elements from both the book and the movie. Moreover, some moments, which had been omitted in Disney production, were restored in the show. Almost every production of it got a reward. West End’s one was awarded for the Best Actress & Choreography. Moreover, it received several Olivier Awards. Broadway version was nominated for Tony and got another one.
