Written in the lighter form of musical comedy rather than their traditional "serious" musical form, Me and Juliet was Rodgers and Hammerstein's Valentine to Broadway. Taking place both backstage and onstage during the performance of a play, it dealt mainly with the love triangle between a singer in the chorus, an assistant stage manager and a jealous, heavy-drinking electrician. The melody of the show's best-known tune had previously been used on an episode of NBC's Victory at Sea.
Me and Juliet premiered at the Majestic Theatre on May 28, 1953 and ran for 358 performances. The original cast featured Isabel Bigley, Bill Hayes and Mark Dawson.
